Certified materials
In 2024, 69% of the materials we use are organic, recycled, or Better Cotton. We aim to increase this percentage each season. In 2021, we also signed the Amsterdam Green Deal Circular Textile, a fashion alliance committed to creating fully circular clothing.

The production of clothing has a significant impact on the environment, from the use of chemicals and energy to agricultural land and water consumption. We strive to reduce our ecological footprint by using as many certified fabrics as possible.

Certifications & Partnerships
We believe it is important to minimize the environmental impact of our clothing production. The labels for the organic, recycled, and Better Cotton materials we use can be found on our products.
By 2025, King Louie aims to classify 100% of our cotton as 'more sustainable cotton.' This includes GOTS-certified cotton, OCS-certified cotton, and Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) cotton.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an international standard for organic textile. We are GOTS certified, CU 851623. Only the products which carry the GOTS label and claim are certified.

Products certified to the Organic Content Standard (OCS 100) contain between 95-100% organically grown cotton that has been independently verified at each stage of the supply chain, from source to final product.
We are OCS certified, CU851623. Only the products which carry the OCS label and claim are certified.

Products certified to the Organic Content Standard (OCS Blended) contain between 5-94% organically grown cotton that has been independently verified at each stage of the supply chain, from source to final product.
We are OCS certified, CU 851623. Only the products which carry the OCS label and claim are certified.

We are proud Members of Better Cotton Initiative. Better Cotton Initiative trains farmers to use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil and natural habitats, reduce use of the most harmful chemicals and implement the principles of decent work.
*Better Cotton Initiative is sourced via a chain of custody model called mass balance. This means that Better Cotton Initiative is not physically traceable to end products, however, Better Cotton Initiative farmers benefit from the demand for Better Cotton Initiative in equivalent volumes to those we ‘source.’

Leather Working Group (LWG) is an organization focused on the environmental impact of leather production. In order to become LWG certified, manufacturers must implement special programs for energy use and wastewater. The leather used by King Louie is Gold Rated (the highest classification).

Global Recycled Standard (GRS) guarantees the fabric consists of at least 20% of recycled content. The GRS certification verifies the recycled content and the socially responsible and environmentally friendly production practices.

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose is a sustainable alternative to viscose. It is made from local trees, which reduces CO2 emissions. The wood is FSC certified, which means that sufficient trees are replanted. The chemicals are reused and 50% less water and energy is required than in the production of traditional viscose. LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose are trademarks of Lenzing AG.

TENCEL™ is a trademark of Lenzing AG. We use both TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers. The responsible production of TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers uses at least 50% less water and emits at least 50% less CO2 compared to generic lyocell and modal fibers, according to Higg MSI*, thereby saving precious resources for future generations.
*Results based on LCA standards (ISO 14040/44) and available via Higg MSI (Version 3.7)

Animal welfare
We do not use angora, down, fur, or exotic skins in our collections.
Animal-derived materials used in our collections—such as silk, leather, and wool (blends)—account for less than
5% of our total materials.
We seek guarantees on the origin of raw materials and prefer to work with tandards that ensure good conditions for both people and animals. The leather used by King Louie comes from Leather
Working Group (LWG)-certified manufacturers, an organization focused on reducing the negative environmental impact of leather production.
The wool we use comes from independently certified sources, ensuring it has been obtained responsibly. Achieving wool certification requires meeting strict standards before we can use and label it accordingly. While we are not yet able to certify all our wool products, we are actively working towards this goal.
Circular production
Our circular garments are designed and produced with sustainability in mind, focusing on minimizing environmental impact. To date, we have created three circular knitwear collections. For these collections, no new raw materials were extracted; instead, we reused existing materials.
We are currently testing new circular fabric innovations. The results of our trials with Circulose have been promising, meaning this material is likely to be added to our Spring/Summer 2026 (SS26) collection.

Returns, reconditioning & Surplus Stock
Returns and reconditioning
Returned garments are always restocked whenever possible. If an item has minor imperfections, such as a small stain, it undergoes reconditioning—steamed and cleaned—before being returned to stock. This process takes place in our warehouse.
If a garment cannot be restored, it is sold at a reduced price at the King Louie stall at Noordermarkt in Amsterdam.
Fortunately, only a very small percentage of our returns are deemed unsellable. On average, this accounts for
just 1-2% of all returns.
Surplus Stock
Items that cannot be sold in our own stores or webshop are never destroyed. Instead, they are sent to our King Louie store in Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet or the Noordermarkt. The same applies to seasonal stock with sufficient sizes remaining.
If any items remain after these channels, they are donated. We are committed to supporting people in the Netherlands who do not have the means to afford a quality wardrobe. Recent donations have been made as close as possible to the locations of the surplus stock, minimizing both transportation costs and CO₂ emissions.
For example:
- 1,700 items were donated from our warehouse in Enschede to the Clothing Bank Enschede.
- 700 items were collected from Batavia Stad for Stichting MILA.
- From our headquarters in Amsterdam, old samples, clothing racks, hangers, and other furniture were donated to the Salvation Army (Leger des Heils).
